“They were leasing out the hotels to the state of Massachusetts for refugees,” Mansbach stated he was told. This was the reaction of three hotels run by Giri Hotel Management, according to Mansbach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The firm, he explained that it was working in partnership with the state to shelter people in need under the right-to- shelter law. His clients’ prior reservations for hotel rooms were removed to maintain the contract to the government. Mansbach stated that 70 reservations of his were affected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In a statement sent to WBZ-TV Thursday on Thursday, a Giri Hotel Management spokesperson didn’t speak to the cancellations in any way, but said they’re committed “to providing shelter and support to refugees at our hotels.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“As a gesture of solidarity and humanitarian responsibility, we are opening our doors to those seeking refuge in our community,” the statement read. “We look forward to working with local authorities and organizations to ensure a smooth transition for all those who will call our hotels home during their time with us.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mansbach stated that in 20 years of work experience, he’d never seen anything similar to this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“I have never had a hotel take rooms back and give me nothing. They sent out cancellations and walked away,” Mansbach said to WBZ. “Some people (clients) have decided not to go, and others found space in Boston. Some I have been able to put into other hotels that I had space left in.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Governor Maura Healey discussed the issue on Wednesday afternoon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“I am very distressed to learn that any veteran may have been moved from a hotel, who had booked a hotel for that game,” Healey stated. “As I understand it, those were decisions made by area hotels.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Healey stated that she had instructed she instructed the Office of Veteran Services to investigate the issue.
